IT IS SO important for babies to get signals from the outside world, says Lana Agiyan, mother of 3 kids, the award-winning product designer behind the Bubble Baby Bed.
Being transparent, our design is about the interaction between the baby inside the crib and the space and people around it. Her design is a stylish re-imagining of the traditional crib whose simplicity belies the specialist technology in its construction. The product is produced by the same company that makes Eero Aarnio’s classic 1960s bubble chair, and there is a definite resemblance in the shape and the transparent acrylic material.
It looks just as futuristic, but the Bubble Baby Bed is still a rocking crib, albeit one that a baby rocks itself. Inspired by the kinetics of a tilting doll, the crib is weighted at the base so that is sways gently back and forth if the baby is restless.
Good design is a philosophy: it affects how well we feel and how we live, says Lana
The idea for making the crib see-through came from the basinets used in maternity wards that allow parents to see their baby. The acrylic is a safer and more hygienic option than fabric bumpers.
She designed the Bubble Baby Bed in 2013 and won the Well-Tech Award for its technical innovation the same year. The seamless bubble bed, which is made in Germany, contains a breathable 3D spacer mesh fabric mattress that supports a baby’s weight while retaining an open texture so any liquid is instantly absorbed.
We use Tencel for the mattress, says Lana. It feels like silk, but it’s durable andwashable.
We use an eco-certified hypoallergenic material, that is super easy to wash at 60C in a washing machine and quick to dry, preventing the growth of bacteria and mould.
Bubble Baby Bed accessories made with 3D mesh fabric, witch welcomes cool air and takesunwanted dampness and moisture out. Breathable surface keeps the baby cool and dry for a more comfortable sleep with less risk of overheating.
